Our ego loves to react deep from within our emotional body to situations by emoting a strong emotion, attempting to control the situation in an effort to get what we think we want. Another alternative is when we pause and ask how would what we say or do affect others; this is called a response, being present thus conscious.
When we respond rather than react to a situation, we merge with it, allowing the (mutual) solution to be an aspect of the situation itself. Responding rather than reacting, allows a more balanced solution that is part of the problem: problem=solution; solution=problem, balancing this equation. If we take credit for what has been accomplished, the ego has reappeared.
